Endometriosis and Infertility - What's the Truth?

I have unexplained infertility -- except I have endometriosis --which, I'm told, means that it's not unexplained. The cactch is this: I had laparoscopy surgery, but did not get pregnant as a result of the surgery. I did one cycle of IVF with a one-egg transfer (at my request) and got pregnant. I've had unprotected sex with my husband for the past 10 years and have never been able to get pregnant on my own. I have normal and regular periods and normal hormone levels, a good uterine lining and a good ovarian response. My HCG showed open tubes.

I'm just curious -- is endometriosis just another way of saying "we don't know?". Why don't the doctor's know more about this and why isn't there a clear explanation? I'd love to have answers. I heard once that only severe endometriosis responds well to surgery -- and that mild to intermediate endometriosis doesn't always result in the same effect. In my mind, I'm not infertile because I was able to have a baby. So, what part of my body is not operating properly and why doesn't it seem that anyone is interested in fixing it?
